A Representative Committee has been inducted into the World Assembly of Inhabitants in Mexico

On June 5 2009 directors of urban social organizations meeting in Mexico City decided to set up the Representative Committee for the 2011 World Assembly of Inhabitants (WAI) and to push forwards the initiative of the WAI 2011 in different social and political spheres of influence, eg making a call for the integration of other social urban movements and the protections of land and water and to outline a direction toward the WAI 2011.

The following urban social movements: Unión Popular Valle Gómez; Coordinadora de Cuartos de Azotea-UCAI; Coordinadora Independiente Emiliano Zapata de Torreón; Barzón de la Cd. de México; Unión Popular Revolucionaria Emiliano Zapata; Escuelita Emiliano Zapata- Col. Sto. Domingo; FCOI; Consejo de Defensa de la Vivienda, Unión de Colonos, Inquilinos y Solicitantes de Vivienda de Veracruz-Pobladores, y el Centro Operacional de Poblamiento y Vivienda , after familiarizing themselves and analyzing the 2009-2010 Strategy of the International Alliance of Inhabitants as well as the Declaration of Madrid which was accomplished at the 2011 World Assembly of Inhabitants at the World Social Forum in Dakar, Senegal, decided the following:

  • to make up the Representative Committee of the World Assembly of Inhabitants 2011 with a representative by organization.
  • to push forwards the initiative of the WAI 2011 in different social and political spheres of influence, eg making a call for the integration of other social urban movements and the protections of land and water
  • to outline a direction toward the WAI 2011, and doing so, information with respect to different events was exchanged, such as:
    • The National Assembly of People's Power (June 2009)
    • Continental Meeting of People's Power (July 2009)
    • Meeting of National Social Housing Production (August or September 2009)
    • The 25th anniversary of Ucisv-ver, Pobladores, August 2009
    • The signing of the Letter for the right to Housing in the City (September or October 2009, Mex. City)
    • World Days for the right to a home and the cessation of evictions: October 2009
    • The first event of the UPU-Mexico, October 2009
    • The World Social Forum-Mexico (January 2010)
    • The International Forum on water (March 2010)
    • The World Urban Forum (March 2010)
    • The International Thematic Forum (to be defined), in the context of the World Social Forum (April 2010)
    • Exchange of knowledge between organizations in defense of housing: evictions because of overdue loans (Mexico-Chile-Uruguay). Date to be decided.
    • Incorporation of activities from the Bicentenary of the Independence of Mexico
    • National Committee Meeting and constitution of Regional Latin American-Caribbean Committee of the World Assembly of Inhabitants – 2011
    • World Assembly of Inhabitants (WAI) 2011, Dakar, Senegal
  • Maintain communication and co-ordination: establish a gateway for WAI-Mexico
  • Initiate a process of recognition between organizations present, so that work is carried out systematically
  • Recover and reintroduce the Memorial of the World Assembly of Inhabitants, 2000, both at national and international level
  • Hold the first Event of the UPU in Mexico in the context of the World Zero Eviction Days for the right to housing and Zero Evictions in October 2009

Once the meeting has concluded, the delegates will toast the momentous step taken to examine initiatives, political efforts and will to set in action unity of the social urban movement in the country.
