Istanbul, the IMECE Forum calling attention on Urban transformation
The 4th Forum of IMECE, one of the leading urban movements in Istanbul, took place at the venue of the Chamber of Architects in Karaköy, Istanbul on March 13, 2011. Reports and researches, as the 3rd Bridge Report, were reminded to the audience, calling attention to the fact that such reports had wide repercussions.
There were 60 participants.Along with representatives from the 9 neighbourhoods of İstanbul, academicians, researchers, students, journalists and activists from urban movements, there were participants from other major cities such as Izmir, Ankara and Bursa. It was remarkable to see the increase in the number of foreign participants this year.
After watching the trailer of the film Ekumenopolis http://www.ekumenopolis.net/#/tr_TR , a film on the urban transformation of İstanbul, which will be shown in the Istanbul Film Festival on the 14th of April, the issues of 2010 and the accomplishments of IMECE were discussed.
Reports and researches of IMECE such as the 3rd Bridge Report, TEKEL (the greatest state monopoly) and Mr.Bayraktar’s Phd. Thesis (a satire on the deeds of Bayraktar, the head of the Mass Housing Administration, who was given an honorory Phd by a well known state university) were reminded to the audience, calling attention to the fact that such reports had wide repercussions.
Some important headlines from the issues and requests were as follows:
- Problems of getting institutionalized.
- The need of the struggle to be taken to a wider context. Solidarity with and support to the urban transformation neighbourhoods must continue; yet it is time to say new things about the city as a whole.
- A publication which, while bringing the political stance of IMECE to the forefront, will at the same time contribute to theoretical and conceptual discussions.
- Establishing IMECE as a public office, an advisory body, for urban issues.
- Not only landowners but tenant populations are also on the agenda of IMECE
- Mobilizing and working against the privatization of education and health institutions.Solidarity with labour organizations, the academia, and similar organizations should continue.
- IMECE Reports and researches on urban issues and institutions fill an important gap; thus these thematic reports should continue
- With the potential of IMECE carrying the theory to the field and what is learned in the field to the theory, an educational institution /body can be established.
Then the problems in the urban context were each discussed under a different title :
- Urban forests and green fields under risk,
- Mega transportation projects (3rd Bridge)
- Historical and cultural assets,
- Public spaces,
- Public services and state lands
- Urban transformation/renewal areas
